The National U16 Championship is the first step toward playing elite rugby in Australia, with players looking to develop their on-field abilities and gain a better understanding of the off-field demands of the modern professional game. The Championships are held in the common week of school holidays toward the end of September/early October annually. Twelve (12) teams participate in two (2) Divisions.

The teams competing in the Division 1 - Rod Macqueen Shield include:

The ARU subsidises the cost of travel, meals and accommodation for players, coaches, physio's and team management. This ensures the best players and management from around Australia have the chance to play in the tournament, regardless of their economic situation.

Apart from hosting 18 games of rugby, the Championships is a residential-style camp designed to educate the players, coaches, managers, referees and physiotherapists through a series of professional development workshops and skill development sessions.  The Championships provides an excellent opportunity to conduct athlete testing and research which provides valuable data into adolescent athletes.

The Championships also provides the perfect platform to identify talented young players who have the potential to rise through the ranks of Schoolboys, Under 19's and Under 21's up to Super 14 and Wallaby level.
